"Why can't I lose weight?" " I have a slow metabolism " . Well what is metabolism anyway? We asked our Registered Dietitian at Harbor Square, Jill Dobson, to explain this to us. Here is what she said:
Metabolism is the amount of energy or calories that your body burns to maintain normal functioning throughout the day. Whether you are eating, doing the dishes, sleeping, your body is constantly burning calories.
What effects metabolism?
Metabolism is affected by multiple factors including; age, gender, medications, hormones and body composition. Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. People who are more muscular and have a lower percentage of body fat have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular. Metabolism also naturally slows a small percentage every decade after the age of 40. So keep moving and incorporating strength training into your exercise plan.
How can I increase my metabolism with diet?
My biggest recommendation to increase your metabolism is to stop dieting! You need to eat. When you eat less than you need for basic biological function, or your resting metabolic rate, your body slows down your metabolism. Try a healthy snack midmorning and afternoon between three meals to keep your metabolism burning strong. By eating a small meal every 3 to 4 hours, you'll stay satisfied and keep from overeating later in the day. Eat early and frequently. Starting off your day with a balanced meal gets your metabolism fired up for the day.
