Is your diet contributing to low-energy levels or difficulty losing weight?  Each person’s body is unique — which foods work for one person may not work for another.  Nutritional counseling is the opportunity for you and a skilled Registered Dietitian to find out what works for you.  Nutritional coaching includes diet and health evaluation, meal planning and support.

Diets tend to over restrict calories rather than achieving a sense of balance with one’s relationship with food.  Your nutrition sessions will address your history with diets, weight loss, weight gain, emotional eating and create a plan that you can live with and maintain healthy habits for a lifetime.  No forbidden foods, no diets or fads…..ALL foods fit into a healthy relationship with eating.

Jill Dobson, Registered Dietitian is Certified in Adult Weight Management by the American Dietetic Association and has been a nutrition educator and coach for over 15 years.

Whether its high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, food allergies or just a general nutrition question…you can get your questions answered here by a nutrition expert.

Introducing the new MedGem© Technology

"Why can't I lose weight?" " I have a slow metabolism " . Well what is metabolism anyway? We asked our Registered Dietitian at Harbor Square, Jill Dobson, to explain this to us. Here is what she said:

Metabolism is the amount of energy or calories that your body burns to maintain normal functioning throughout the day. Whether you are eating, doing the dishes, sleeping, your body is constantly burning calories.

What effects metabolism?

Metabolism is affected by multiple factors including; age, gender, medications, hormones and body composition. Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. People who are more muscular and have a lower percentage of body fat have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular. Metabolism also naturally slows a small percentage every decade after the age of 40. So keep moving and incorporating strength training into your exercise plan.

How can I increase my metabolism with diet?

My biggest recommendation to increase your metabolism is to stop dieting! You need to eat. When you eat less than you need for basic biological function, or your resting metabolic rate, your body slows down your metabolism. Try a healthy snack midmorning and afternoon between three meals to keep your metabolism burning strong. By eating a small meal every 3 to 4 hours, you'll stay satisfied and keep from overeating later in the day. Eat early and frequently. Starting off your day with a balanced meal gets your metabolism fired up for the day.

  • Have you always wondered how many calories you are burning each day?
  • Have you hit a plateau in your weight loss journey?

We are proud to introduce a new service available at Harbor Square Athletic Club. Jill Dobson, Harbor Square Dietitian, is now offering Metabolic Testing with MedGEM© Technology to determine your resting metabolic rate. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) represents the calories burned to maintain vital body functions. Since metabolism is different for all individuals, MedGem© can provide an accurate picture of YOUR caloric needs.
